30TH ANNIVERSERY, ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY CELEBRETS
The Islamic University, the first public university founded after independence, turns 30 tomorrow. Students, teachers and employees of the university will mark the occasion of Islamic University Day with a procession, a rally and a discussion. No classes and examinations will be held on the day. The offices will, however, remain open. The university began its journey this day in 1979 offering higher education in science and technology in combination with religious ethics. The late president Ziaur Rahman laid the foundation stone of the university on this day in 1979. It was set up on 175 acres of land at Shantidanga-Dulalpur, in the border between Kushtia and Jhenaidah. Momtaj Uddin was the first vice-chancellor. The university was later moved to Gazipur in 1992 when HM Ershad was the president of the country. Khaleda Zial, who was then prime minister, moved the university to its original site later. About 11,000 students are now enrolled with this university, having about 320 teachers in 22 departments under five faculties and a centre for advanced research. The vice-chancellor, M. Alauddin, in a message hoped the university would emerge as the best institution of learning and researches.
